Bleaching Pills are now gradually filling up the gap between the old traditional bleaching creams and lotions. Bleaching, now rebranded as “Toning” is the fashion lifestyle among dark and light skin women nowadays. The bleaching pill is to be taken alongside Vitamins C supplements for an effective result. The prescription of the drug is to be taken 2 pills and 1 Vitamin C once daily for it to work perfectively.
Over the years, the old fashion way of bleaching is gradually moving out of the system because people see the bleaching pills to be more effective than the old traditional way. Bleaching was mostly practiced by women but the table has now turned to men.
During our public survey in the cosmetics market, most of the bleaching pills were not certified by the Ghana Food and Drug Authority but have found their way to the Ghanaian market. The drugs neither bear any certified safety seal.
The safety of the bleaching Pills is not known and those patronizing them don’t really care. All they care about is the good results they are getting. Most of these bleaching pills are mostly Chinese products smuggled into the country.
In an interview, it was revealed that some pregnant women take the bleaching pills believing it will make their unborn child white. The bleaching pills can make one white in about three to four weeks effectively when taken according to prescribed.
The ideology of a black African trying to become white is still not clear. Many people spend a huge sum of money just to become white. Several campaigns have been made against skin bleaching and its health complications but those who patronize them put deaf ears.
We hope Ghana Food and Drug Authority will take an investigation into the consumption of these Bleaching Pills to check the health implication of the drug to avoid any future disaster.
